FOUR-TRACK DEMOS

Date: Around 1994
Recorded at: Flea’s House

  • Time for Me to Go

  • Ouch

  • Tantric Sex

  • Fiber Optics

    and probably many more

Around the time the Red Hot Chili Peppers were writing for One Hot Minute, Flea flirted with the idea of having a solo career, probably as a result of starting to learn how to play guitar to come up for ideas for new songs for the band. When asked about a solo album Bikini Magazine in early 1995, he mentions having done some four track recordings. Four of these demos leaked in the early 00's without any accompanying info at all.

“I’VE BEEN DOWN”

Date: January or February 1995
Recorded at: Ocean Way Recording, Los Angeles, CA
Produced by: Flea, Rick Rubin
Engineered by: ?
Additional Musicians: Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins

This song was recorded during the final stages of the One Hot Minute sessions, especially for inclusion on The Basketball Diaries Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (released April 4, 1995). It was Flea’s first ever release under his own name.

FIRST SOLO ALBUM

Date: Mid to late 1996
Recorded at: Sound City Studios, Los Angeles, CA
Produced by: Flea, Sylvia Massy
Engineered by: Sylvia Massy
Additional Musicians: Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins, Dix Denny, Jewel

  • Tantric Sex

  • No Words

  • Congo Song

  • Media Blitz [The Germs] (unconfirmed)

    and more

After making a deal with Warner Bros., Flea begun recording his solo album shortly after the band finished touring and by the end of the year the sessions were done. The band started writing and recording for their next album during the first half of 1997 and he spent most of the second half rehearsing and touring for Jane’s Addiction’s reunion gigs.

Tantric Sex was featured on the 1997 compilation Schooloaf (Everything But the Crust). No Words was supposedly featured during the end credits of the independent movie Liar's Poker, in which Flea had a starring role, but it’s not present on the DVD or BD versions of the film nor is credited, making that very unlikely, so it probably just leaked around the early 00’s when it started circulating online. Congo Song was seen on a DAT tape with mixes from the sessions. Media Blitz was probably recorded during these sessions as it was released on a Germs tribute album in late 1996.

What else what recorded and why it wasn’t released is unknown. A safe guess is that Flea wasn't happy with how they turned out and completely scrapped them.

On a March 5, 1998 appeareance on Late Night with Conan O' Brien while promoting his acting on The Big Lebowski film, Conan mentions his solo album coming soon on which Flea replies: “I’m on the eve of recording my solo record, it’s actually not coming out soon but it’s something I’m really excited about”, implying he was starting it all over again. On a March 28, 1998 news update on the RHCP official website, it’s mentioned Flea wanted to finish his solo album before the band were to start their new one. So it would seem that new studio sessions were probably started for his solo album, but abandoned shortly after with Dave Navarro leaving the band and John Frusciante rejoining.

“HELEN BURNS”

Date: Late 2007
Recorded at: Flea’s House, Los Angeles, CA
Produced by: Flea, Chris Warren
Engineered by: Chris Warren
Additional Musicians: Jack Irons, Stella Mozgawa, Chad Smith, Patti Smith, Keith Barry, Silverlake Conservatory of Music Choir

  • 333

  • Pedestal of Infamy

  • A Little Bit of Sanity

  • Helen Burns

  • 333 Revisited

  • Lovelovelove

Recorded at the back room of his house after getting back from the lenghty Intergalactic Tour in support of Stadium Arcadium. At the time of recording, there were no plans for these recordings to be anything but just as a way for Chris Warren to learn how to be a sound engineer, therefore probably more music from these sessions exist.

Self-released on July 19, 2012 at “name your own price” to raise money for The Silverlake Conservatory of Music, and later reissued by ORG Music.

NEW SOLO ALBUM

Date: Late 2024 - 2025
Recorded at: ?
Produced by: ?
Engineered by: ?
Additional Musicians: Nick Cave, Jeff Parker (unconfirmed), unknown others

Not much is known about these sessions yet, but Flea has been expressing his intentions to work on a trumpet/jazz album on interviews during the last couple of years.

During a November 2024 interview with GQ, he talked about currently working really hard on a trumpet album. On March 2025, shared a photo on Instagram stories of a studio console with “A Love Supreme” jacket over it and a few days later, Nick Cave mentioned just recording vocals on a song for Flea’s album.
