Referenced in this song: Men at Work, Duran Duran, Gap Band, Wham!, Soft Cell, and Pack Jam (which is actually a song, not a band), among a few others.

An earlier version of the song was recorded in May of 1983 during the band’s first demo session, with the band’s original lineup. There’s a good chance another demo was recorded early the next year at a different session, featuring Jack Sherman and Cliff Martinez on guitar and drums, and a further demo done (with Hillel and Cliff) during the Freaky Styley pre-production process.

Anthony’s rap at the beginning of the song was lifted from the demo recording. Why he didn’t re-record that part when the band re-did the song is unknown; perhaps they wanted to leave a nod to the original sessions, which wouldn’t be heard in full for another decade.
