True Men Don’t Kill Coyotes was the first song written by the Sherman-era lineup, in December of 1983 and January of 1984, during early rehearsals for the band’s first album. According to Anthony Kiedis, the lyrics were loosely inspired by the Los Angeles punk band X.

The first track on the first album, this was also the first of the band’s songs to have a video filmed for it, shot in September 1984. The backdrop and boulder props were later used on stage at a show at the Roxy.
